Lily and Mouse are 2 BEAUTIFUL 10-Month-old Siamese cats.

They came in for a routine Health Check with our nurse Alex. Whilst she was doing her ‘Nose to Tail’ check she noticed a yellow stain on the back of Lily’s neck.  It turns out that she was playing and knocked over some oriental lilies and some of the pollen had got onto her coat.

Not everyone knows this but lilies are highly toxic to cats and though they may be beautiful to look at, a cat could die of kidney failure if he should eat any part of these toxic species and not receive treatment immediately. In fact, as little as two leaves can make your cat sick, and if left untreated, can become fatal in as little as three days.

As we were unsure if either Mouse or Lily had ingested any of the pollen whilst grooming we erred on the side of caution and admitted both to take some blood to test the kidney levels and to put them both on intravenous fluids. The fluids keeps the cats hydrated and supports blood flow to the kidneys preventing them from getting damaged.  To monitor the kidneys for damage, we do the same blood test over a few days to make surre these levels are not increasing.  We also monitor the urine output as this is also an indicator of what the kidneys are doing.

Whilst in hospital, Mouse’s bloods were normal but Lily’s had changed a bit but thankfully we saw them quick enough and started the treatment and are pleased to report both girls are doing great! In fact, they have just been in to be neutered and are in top (vocal) form.

Well Done to both Mouse and Lily.
