Uveitis

Intraocular inflammation (“anterior uveitis”) is a relatively common problem in cats. The eye will become cloudy and the iris will appear darker or more reddish-brown in colour. This condition requires intensive topical treatment with anti-inflammatory medications to prevent serious complications, such as glaucoma, which may lead to blindness and even loss of the eye. Very often an intensive work-up and search for the underlying cause is necessary, including serologic investigation for cat-specific viral diseases (particularly Feline Leukemia Virus, Feline immunodeficieny virus and Feline Coronavirus) which all may cause inflammation inside one or both eyes.

Anterior uveitis in the left eye. The iris is darker and reddish-brown, the pupil is miotic (small).
